God’s Tattoo

Lately I’ve been fascinated by a new TV show called LA Ink. It’s about a popular tattoo parlor in Los Angeles,La_ink and
all the weird and wonderful creatures who both patronize and work in the shop. The show can be a little racy; I’ve turned it off a few times. But what’s interesting is the designs that people choose to have etched in their flesh. If you’re going to permanently alter your appearance with a tattoo, what would you choose? Something very important to you. So I think I watch because I’m fascinated by the glimpse into people’s souls, a look at what is so precious to them that they would offer their body up to the needle to carry that picture around with them for the rest of their days.

It’s notable that many tattoos have spiritual themes, so it’s not surprising that people into goddess worship135975320_1d16526e42_m
often have goddess tattoos (if you’re interested, see a previous post called More Goddess Trends). Most Christians seem to shy away from the tattoo scene, although a church beach trip will probably reveal a number of small, tasteful tattoos when the clothes come off. (On a side note, I remember a trip not long ago to Niagara Falls. A massive heat wave had everyone, young and old, walking around in shorts and tank tops and I saw a plethora of tattoos on the older crowd. Not an appetizing sight. Two words: faded and wrinkly.)

But did you know God has a tattoo? Today’s Christian Woman magazine has a very cool article by Stephanie Voiland on this topic, called "God’s Tattoo." It’s a fresh take on a verse in Isaiah. I think you’ll like it … and it might give you a whole new outlook on tattoos…at least from God’s point of view.

Today I’m thankful that God’s love is even more permanent than tattoo ink … and, it’s free.

Interesting post! I am a Christian woman, and I have two tattoos (small, tasteful). I don’t feel that it’s wrong, because as a Christian I am not bound by the old covenant laws. Of course, a tattoo must be honoring to God. I live in Taiwan and I have “living water” on my ankle in Chinese characters. This phrase is unheard of in Chinese outside of Christian circles, so Taiwanese people are constantly asking me what my tattoo means. I’ve never had so many chances to share the Gospel!

Thanks for your comment, Cahleen. The author of “God’s Tattoo” got some pretty negative reviews from Christians, so it’s neat to get another opinion…and to hear that God can use a tattoo as an opportunity to talk about your faith!
      Blessings,
