Interview with Ward Gasque

I recently interviewed Ward Gasque, a much respected New Testament scholar and historian. Here’s what he had to say …

Q. Is religion, as a whole, on the decline?
A. G. K. Chesterton once said,

"When men cease to believe in God, they do not believe in nothing; they believe in anything."

Until recently, many Europeans and North Americans have believed
that religion is dying out.  The evidence points in the exact opposite
direction.

While the church in Europe has been in great decline over the past
two centuries and people have been predicted a similar decline for
churches in the USA (though this has not yet become a reality), the
fact is that for every atheist or agnostic there are a dozen who follow
some new age or neo-pagan religion, or who are at least influenced by
these ideas.

Q. Is goddess worship an ancient tradition, or a modern invention? Arab_women_women_7
A. Although the multitudinous new age and neo pagan religions claim
roots in antiquity, such as an original Mother Goddess religion, these
claims are, for the most part, modern inventions.  And the idea that
Goddess worship is uplifting to women and that the worship of Yahweh/God is the source of both war and oppression (especially the oppression
of women) is simply unsubstantiated.  Take a trip around the globe
today and visit the temples dedicated to the worship of goddesses, and
you will find them anything but centers of women’s liberation.
