Goddess spirituality is sort of a mix-and-match consumer religion, where you can pick your favorite goddess to worship. Mary Magdalene, one of Jesus’ followers, is a popular choice, especially among women with a Catholic background.
You can see what I mean with this quote from a group focused on Mary Magdalene worship: "She was a manifestation of the sacred feminine, perhaps the daughter of Sophia and God-the-Father. Sophia, goddess of wisdom, called God’s Spouse, lives in the pages of the Old and New Testaments."
Now comes along a new movie by an Academy Award winning director, claiming to have discovered the very bones of Mary Magdalene, buried with those of Jesus. Here’s the scoop … and the truth.
Sunday night The Discovery Channel premiered The Lost Tomb of Jesus, a new film from Titanic director James Cameron. The 90-minute film claimed that the ossuaries (or bone boxes) of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, and possibly a son named Judah were discovered at a construction site in Israel in 1980.
National Geographic reported that "inscriptions on the boxes, in addition to DNA tests of tiny bits of tissue found inside, suggest that the cave was the final resting place of Jesus,
his disciple Mary Magdalene, and their son.The claims, if verified, could threaten key tenets of the Christian faith, most notably that Jesus never married or had children and that he was resurrected three days after his death."
Aramaic inscriptions on three of the boxes read "Judah, son of Jesus," "Jesus, son of Joseph," and "Mariamne," a Greek name linked by the film to Mary Magdalene.
Sensational? Yes. True? No. Here are the facts, from the experts:
to make a story out of this or to identify this as the family of Jesus. So the experts agree: The Lost Tomb of Jesus film and its claims are bogus. Christianity Today’s daily blog asks: "So why did … Cameron get such massive media attention—and, at least initially, such uncritical coverage? Why was the story, "Has Jesus Been Found?" and not, "Has James Cameron Lost It?"
Clearly, the media recognizes the continued interest in Jesus, and Mary Magdalene.
And what about Mary? Is she worthy of worship? After the crucifixion, she came face to face with Jesus at the garden tomb. "Mary," he called her. Through her tears, she recognized him. "Teacher," she called out. She was a friend of Christ, not a spouse. She was a woman, not a goddess. God alone is worthy of worship, and He will never be found in a bone box.

interesting blog, looks like we’ve been reading some of the same stuff, I’ll drop back and read more- thanks for making me think.

Thanks, Sally. Look forward to hearing more from you.

It’s a shame when someone as supposedly intelligent as yourself mistakes the superficial for an in-depth study of the subject matter. You need to spend some time studying the subject before you make yourself out as an expert. The facts of Goddess worship are not a self-serving feminist issue as you would have you readers believe. It is an historical fact that has been undermined and buried by the organized church since early days. Let me ask you this, would we have the pedophilia crisis in the Catholic Church, murder statistics against women by their spouses, and rape statistics through the roof, if the idea of a God/Goddess equality based religion and then a society being as respectful to women as it is to men being the norm? Think about it. It’s a much deeper subject than the lip service you’ve given to it. It’s happening, and like a rolling stone, it’s gathering momentum. It isn’t a feminist fad, it’s a deep held realization.

Dr. Stover,
Thanks for the comment. I agree I’m not an expert, but I’m learning. Our society is deeply flawed when it comes to how women are treated; however, there are many places where women are much more marginalized, and considered second or third class citizens. So, I’m very grateful for the freedoms we have here. I think we differ, though, on where that oppression and ill treatment comes from. I think we live in a deeply flawed society, a sin-cursed world turned upside down by our rebellion against the one, true Creator God. Although the church has not always followed his example, Jesus loved men and women equally. Paul says in Christ there is “no male or female.” Blessings!

I agree with MaryEllen.
You really are sensationally badly-informed on this subject and would do best to leave it well alone.

Chris, it’s a big subject and I think there’s room for all of us to participate in the discussion.

I visited the Esoteric Mysteries website (which is beautiful, thanks for sharing that link) but couldn’t find anything about the Jesus Tomb. If they aren’t endorsing it, then what is the connection you see?
Also, do you object to the idea of Jesus and Mary Magdalene being married? If so, could you point me to the scriptures that say their marriage never happened, or that it would be a bad thing?
Thanks

Lore, thanks for the question on Jesus & MM. I’ll wrote a post on that.
As to the link to the Esoteric Mysteries website, many of my blog readers are evangelical Christians (as am I). Many of them are unfamiliar with goddess spirituality and that many people choose to worship Mary Magdalene as a goddess. My link was intended to show those readers that fact. Sorry for the confusion.

Wow. I had something I wanted to say and then the wind was knocked out of me.
Before I comment on today’s article about the James Cameron movie, I’d like to say something.
Christianity, as it is taught in the Bible, is not anti-woman or anti-feminist. I like the saying, “Jesus was the first feminist.” Man has made the practice of Christianity anti-woman in some churches and even some denominations. Why has this happened? Because “all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23.
Susy may not be an “expert” in goddess worship, and I think pointing out her lack of expertise begs the question: what expertise do you have in the field of Bible-based Christianity?

Now I forgot what I was going to say about the film. Hmm.

Kristy,
You’re right. None of us are experts; we’re all seekers looking for truth, and I think we all have much to learn. Glad you’ve joined the discussion!

Isn’t expertise in the field of Bible-based Christianity equivalent to expertise in the Torah on the part of the Pharisees of old?
Doesn’t expertise in the Bible tend to indicate individuals using that in place of knowing the Living Christ?
If Christ hasn’t been dead (or very very absent) for the past almost 2,000 years, what does Christ have to say NOW about Goddess, Herself?
If the Living Christ is actually praising Goddess to those who are in real contact with Him, what does that say about all this “Biblical expertise” that is in opposition to Her actual Living Divine Holy Spirit?!
“Sophia is justified by all Her children.” — Jesus Christ, Luke 7:35
When you “unmask Goddess” behind *one* of Her veils is the Living Christ!

Jesus Christ is revealed through the Bible, God’s living Word. It’s our rock and our foundation and its message has been the same for thousands of years, both Old and New Testament.
The goddess and Jesus are not the same. In fact, their message are diametrically opposed. Goddess spirituality teaches that truth is found within; it worships the Self. Christianity teaches that truth is found in Jesus, the Son of the Living God and the only perfect person who ever lived; so, we worship Jesus Christ.
Luke 7 talks about wisdom personified in Jesus. More on that in another post–interesting passage!

The truth *is* found within.
Absolutely *everything* you see, hear, experience, learn — everything “outside” you happens as a perception *inside* you.
The truth cannot be found anywhere *but* within — for everything registers within. What does not register within remains unknown to you.
When Jesus realized, “I and the Father are One,” that realization was happening *inside* him.
The Self that is recognized is the *Divine* Self — within — the Presence of the *omnipresent* Divine, Who *has* to be *inside* each of us, too, lest Divine Omnipresence be a lie — & God is not so all-powerful afterall!
So Goddess spirituality’s teachings of the “Self” within is recognition of Divine Omnipresence — distinguishing it from the ego self. To worship the Self is hardly to be worshipping one’s own personal ego.
Obviously the Infinite Divine doesn’t have human linguistic biases as to whether S/he is called He or She, “God” or “Goddess”.

The truth *is* within you. The Holy Spirit as Comforter (mistranslated as “he” — when Yeshua was saying “She” in the Aramaic he was speaking) will be “with you forever” & “dwells with you and will be IN you.”
cf. John 14: 15 – 16
The Holy Spirit IS the Living Divine Truth. She is IN those who wholly love the genuine Living Jesus (rather than loving the “Jesus” of their own ego’s “through a glass darkly” theological idolatry). Many who are involved in Goddess spirituality continue to love Jesus *most* deeply — thus the Holy Spirit stirs within them & works thru them.
Paul clearly admits that he & those with him saw “through a glass darkly” — meaning they lacked the Larger Divine Truth in all its Fullness. The “glass darkly” of each of our human egos *distorts* through the grid of our beliefs that are faulty in ways we do not realize, just as was so with Paul, Peter & other Biblical writers.
If the Holy Spirit was able to “keep perfect” all translations, we would not have such divergent translations — on the part of very sincere translators of all denominations.
Thus the Living Christ, Her Holy Spirit, have problems “getting through” to lots of sincere believers — because everything in the Bible is not an accurate measure for discerning the Larger Divine Truth — which certainly Christ & Her Spirit know. Bible-believing Christians consistently *reject* Christ’s & the Living Spirit’s Further Teachings as coming from “deceiving spirits” — due to faulty translations like calling the Holy Spirit “he”.

The true shame in all of this is that it does not truly matter if any of it is TRUE or NOT.
God is energy, energy is love and light and everything good. Energy has no beginning and no end. Like we invision God – love and light and everything good, no beginning and no end – a forever presence. What Jesus understood that a lot of people still do not get, it this-
God is INSIDE everyone of us. We must stop praying and looking for answers outside of ourselves. All the answers are in each and every one of us.
Organized religion teaches that God is devine and we are his creation. Maybe so, but we are just as devine, if not MORE. We DO control our own destiny.
Why am I telling you all of this?
I stumbled upon this page and something inside just told me you needed to know. As stated by J. Krishnamurti -”Truth is a Pathless Land”
We welcomeing you to our holy commune of sangreal In the name of feminine divinity.
